Air Maiden

Air Maiden, the original Scottish all-women’s freeride event, returns to Glentress in mid-May.

After a three-year break, Lynne Aitchison (now Armstrong) and the team are bringing back this hugely popular weekend of coaching to the Tweed Valley. During its five-year reign at Glentress Freeride Park, around 50 women travelled each year from around the UK to become a ‘Maiden’, attracted by the combination of highly qualified and experienced coaches – and the chance to pick up new riding skills and reach your potential as a rider. There’s no pressure to compete against other riders. All that’s needed is a mountain bike, an idea of what challenges you’d like to overcome, from jumps and drops to skinnies and berms, and a healthy dose of enthusiasm.

While the event offers a chance to ride with and learn from some of the UK’s most talented riders, there is also a focus on having fun with like-minded female riders of all standards in a relaxed and supportive environment. It’s a format that has helped hundreds of women to push themselves out of their comfort zone. In fact, every year most Maidens attempt – and nail – the event’s purpose-built trick jump in what is always a very grand finale to a fantastic weekend.

When: this weekend of coaching and mini festival will be held on Saturday, May 14-15 at Glentress Freeride Park as part of the renowned Tweedlove bike festival.

How much: £60

What does it involve?

  • Multiple small-group coaching skills sessions: jumps, drop-offs, wall rides, berms and more.
  • Entry into the Air Maiden pump track challenge on Saturday afternoon.
  • Entry into the jump jam and fun competition on Sunday and a chance to win some of the great giveaways from event sponsors.
